Willy Freeman vs. Chloe Sanders

What if your life depended on you? What if your family’s lives counted on you? What if you were the one causing someone in your family to die. In the stories The Awakening and War Comes to Willy Freeman the main characters deal with this. The more they mess up, the more their family gets in danger. This is why these two characters have so much in common, even though the two teenagers live completely different lives.

Chloe is a girl, who everyone suspects to be crazy. But really, she’s not. Willy is just a girl, where everyone underestimates her. They both are so much alike and have major problems in life. Adults don’t respect them ever, and they never have a chance to be the kid. These characters are always the ones taking action in life, when their parents really should. Both characters need to stand up for themselves, and be the kids they’re meant to be. They both are pretty brave to run away from danger, and walk into some more.

A very bad habit that Chloe and Willy have is that they both run away from their problems. They don’t think that they should fix their problems that they made, until after they do something. These girls need to think ahead and look into the future, and think of what problems they will cause. Or what trouble they could get into. But they don’t care; they just go with the flow, which they really need to change.

Obviously Chloe and Willy have differences. One of them lives in a mental home, and the other is living in a war zone. If you put aside their surroundings, and look at how they act, they are still pretty different. Willy is just really selfish, only trying to fit her needs. She doesn’t care if what she does is going to hurt other people, which is horrible. Chloe, on the other hand, is wonderful and risks her life to save others. She never gives up and probably a better person than Willy, seeing that she cares for others and not only herself.

Both these girls live completely different lives. Even though they’re in different books, they have different personalities, and live in completely different areas, doesn’t mean they’re only different. They could also be alike. If you take two people and compare them, let’s say a bully that lives in Kansas and a nice kid in Australia, they probably have something in common, aside from the way they look. There is such thing as being unique, but other people might be just as unique as you.

The Man in the Red Hat

It was a windy day in Manhattan, and the streets were empty. There was no noise throughout the whole city, but the sound of my feet stomping on the ground while I’m walking. I look around, wondering if I’m dreaming the quietness, then I hear a plea for help. I sprint, to follow the sound of the women’s cry, to find a man, in a red hat, beating her with a baseball bat. I was mesmerized by the blood erupting from her head. Then I snap out of it. I couldn’t bear to see this, so I went up to the guy and punched him in the eye. He fell to the ground. I turn him over so I can see his face. He has no face. I couldn’t describe it even if I tried. All I knew is that there was no flesh on it. He wasn’t human. I turned and made a mad dash for the door. I stop, because I smell my mother’s homemade pancakes. But she’s dead. How is that possible? I turn around, only to find the man, with the bat. The next thing I knew he was beating me, and I blacked out.

I woke up on a white floor, and I have no idea where I am. But for some reason that place seemed really familiar. Then I hear someone call my name, “Michael, follow my voice. I have a surprise for you…” Of course I follow him, what do I have to lose?
“Where are you?” I asked the voice from above.

“I’m across the crystal bridge. Just go to the end of it and walk down the steps.” I walked down the bridge. He wasn’t kidding. The bridge really was crystal. It was shiny see through crystal, and it was so beautiful. The sun shined right through it to make a bright rainbow across the whole floor. “Where are you? I went down the steps and you’re nowhere to be found.” I exclaimed.

“Turn around.” I slowly turn around, and scream at the top of my lungs. I find a man, in a white robe, white sandals, and a beard flowing in the wind. The beard smells pretty delicious. It smells like….like…..my mother’s pancakes! Why do I keep smelling them? Anyways, the man kind of reminds me of Jesus. “Hello young man, my name is Jesus,” well that makes sense.”I would like to welcome you to Heaven.” Jesus steps a little to the side, and there’s my mother. More beautiful and stunning than ever before.

“Mom!” I run over and give her the biggest hug you could ever give someone. She hugs back. I feel like I’m alive again! Then she slaps hard in the face with a brick, and I wake up. In a hospital. On the floor.

“He’s alive! I can’t believe this! You’re a lucky man, Michael.”

“I know I know.” I sprinted, out of the room, out of the hospital, all the way to my apartment three miles away. “I can’t believe this is happening to me again. After all these years, it’s happened again. Why now? Why at this time? This doesn’t make any sense to me. I’ve gotta leave town again, and change my name, and get a new home. How’d he find me? The man in the red hat, that evil little…” I hear a knock, a loud knock. So loud my eardrums are pounding, and I can’t even hear myself breath. I follow the disturbing noise, and it leads to the patio door, so I know the sound is coming from something on my deck.

I stick my head out the door, and there he was, Jesus was eating some peanuts and throwing the shells at my wall. Which you wouldn’t think was too loud, but it was crazy loud. “What are you doing here?” I said, with a scared tone. I wasn’t expecting him any time soon.

“Saving you. You’ve been through too much, and I’m sorry about Chad.” I had no clue who Chad was. I never even heard of the guy. “Who’s Chad?”

“Don’t you remember? Chad Loopy, you guys used to be best friends, until he went loopy, and now he’s ‘the man in the red hat’ as you call him.” And I freeze. Every muscle in my body stops functioning right, and I can’t move. My heart feels like it stopped, and I can’t breathe. My lungs are closing, as I’m gasping for air. The room starts spinning, and I fall. I can’t control what I am doing or feeling. All of a sudden, everything is a blur. The last thing I saw was the man in the red hat, with a knife with dark red blood dripping off of it, and him laughing. “That’s what you get Michael; you always knew it was coming.”

Main Conflict for War Comes to Willy Freeman

The main conflict in War Comes to Willy Freeman, would probably be that Willy punched her aunts boss. This was a horrible thing to do because it wasn’t only bad for her, but for her whole family. If she didn’t punch him, her life would be different from there to the end of the book. She would have never been whipped, she would have never almost had her uncle put into slavery again, and everything would just be a whole lot better for her. But she took the long rout in life, and decided that she can do whatever she wants, and then run away from her problems. I believe that if she never would have got into a fight with her aunts boss, she would have never been through all of the messes she got into. She needs to learn that even though she starts a fight, it doesn’t mean that she has to finish it.

The story of Janet, the College Drop-out

“Hey Janet, can I talk to you for a second?” Asks the teacher.

“Sure. What’s up Mrs. W?”

“You are failing my class. And you won’t be able to make it up by the end of the semester. I’m very disappointed in you.”

“I’m gonna drop out of school,” says Janet, “ and become a flash mob dancer. That’s always been my dream. Goodbye”

*****************************next day

I called all my friends. Told them to meet up with me at 12:00 p.m at the mall. I’m there at 11:54, and I can’t find anyone. Anyway, it hits noon, and I start dancing like crazy. Everybody is looking and laughing. I thought I was good, and I look down to start my jazz hands low, and I realize I’m naked. I make this really high pitched sound, that I highly regret because the people that weren’t looking, glanced over at me. I made a mad dash for the closest shop, which happened to be Aeropostle. Of course, the dressing rooms were locked. So I was standing there, my hands over my junk, when my ex walked straight up to me.

“Hello Janet.” says my ex in the most annoying tone ever.

“Hi….? Do you work here now.”

“Yes. Yes I do…may I ask you why you’re naked?”

“Oh, that? Umm… I actually have no idea how I got naked.”

“Interesting….”

She was very nice, and gave me her yoga outfit that she had. She loves yoga. Anyway, I was wearing this skin tight shirt, with girly yoga pants walking out of the building. Everybody noticed me, but this time nobody laughed. I realized I kind of liked the feeling of the clothes, and that’s how I became a drag queen.

Point of view Historical Fiction

Authors Note: we had to write a response to if we think our main character is a good narrator. If you are reading, War Comes to Willy Freeman, please comment if you agree with me. Thanks!

Willy, in War Comes to Willy Freeman, is the main character and the narrator. She shows how innocent she is and how sad her life is. She lives a very sad life and this book shows how she gets treated and how it feels to be a free African American girl. Also when she is stuck in weird and awkward situations, it makes it more dramatic because usually all the things that are happening to her would happen to women, not 13 year olds. When she’s sailing in the water and the soldiers see her, there’s not much she can do or say, but if she was older she would’ve actually known what to do. Instead of waiting in the boat and staring at the stars, waiting for the soldiers to come get her, she could’ve said something. But instead she made it more dramatic than it really had to be.

I personally think her point of view would be better than others in the story because she had a more interesting life, traveling around to try to find her mother. The only person I think would be more interesting to read about maybe would be her mom. While she was away for two years, it might have been interesting to read what she was doing and how the men treated her. If her mom was elling her point of view when she was dying, I'm sure it would be different because it seemed like she wanted to die. Willy didn't want her to, and I think it would end up being a lot different. Even if they were related, doesn't mean they have the same life.

Rob(Creative Piece)

Rob was a big man, and whenever he robbed some store, he would hide the items under his fat. One day Rob went into Wal-mart, and did his Christmas shopping. The man ran out of the store, as fast as his body could let him. He quickly crossed to the other side of the street, hoping they would not notice him. Of course someone did. "Wheee-hoo! Whee-hoo! Whee-hoo!"
"Uh oh! Here comes the Po-po!" yelled Rob. He tried running away, but he wasn't very fast. The 'Po-Po' caught him, and took him to jail. The nice policeman asked if Rob stole anything. Of course he said no. The policeman didn't believe him and took him to this one dark room. There were detectives and other officers in there too. One lady was looking at the footage of him stealing some shoes, and saw that the man stuffed them up his shirt. So she lifted up his shirt, and started digging. She found a pair of shoes,2 hats, a pair of mittens, 3 Nintendo DS's and a HUGE glass of Wine. Long story short, Rob didn't get any Christmas presents that year.

Aunt Betsy's Point of View

Authors note:
We had to write a different point of view of a different character from the story than the narrator(or main character). I wrote mine about the book, War Comes to Willy Freeman, and I'm doing it on how Willy aunt's diary and how she felt when Willy just showed up at her house and expected to be taken care of, because she had no where else to go.

Monday

Dear Diary,
Today my niece came all the way from Groton to my town. I feel so bad for her! Her mother went missing and her father died right in front of her. I don't care that she has no place to live, but if she stays any longer than a couple of days, we're gonna get kicked out. I wouldn't want me and my family to have no place to live, so I think I'm going to tell her she has to go tomorrow night. After I wash the dishes. Maybe that will be a good time.
Sincerely,
Betsy
Wednesday

Dear Diary,
Willy's gone! If her mother ever comes back she's going to kill me! She loved that girl so dearly, and now she's gone. All because of me. I should've kept track of her. I should've kept her safe when I could've. What if she went off in the Jolly Boat? That girl knows there's still soldiers around. She's gonna get herself killed! What have I done!!!???!
Sincerely,
Betsy

Why Ponybpy is a Dynamic character

Ponyboy changes a lot in the story. He changes the way he thinks about things and starts using his head more. He goes from, 'the Socs are so bad, we have nothing in common, they're horrible people blah blah blah', to, 'they're regular people just like me, they aren't that bad blah blah blah'. He starts thinking Randy is just a normal guy, with normal problems, just like him. Ponyboy also changes his mind about fighting in the rumble, because someone could've gotten really hurt. And he couldn't risk it after what happened to Johnny. I really think he starts changing his mind more because he starts thinking more. In the beginning he had trouble thinking right on the spot, but now he's like BOOM I'm smart, and I can think fast.

The Importance of Family

Have you ever thought what life would be like, without parents? Without them driving you places, shopping for you, tucking you in at night, or just giving you a plain old hug? Well, I have. And it would be horrible. I’d miss them too much, just like Ponyboy, Sodapop, Darry, and many other characters in the book The Outsiders. So many people in this book have troubles with their parents, which is never good. Everybody deserves a good relationship with their parents.

Ponyboy (the main character in the book) and his brothers Darry and Sodapop only lived with each other once their parents died in a car crash. They have only had each other to look after, and no one to keep them safe like a parent would. This family has other people to look after them, like their “gang” the greasers, but it’s not the same as a family. But they don’t take good care of themselves. They always keep their front door unlocked, which is extremely dangerous in the type of neighborhood they live in. People could just walk in there and murder them. Think of how dangerous it would be if you didn’t have a parent living with you. Think of how it would be living with only your siblings, while you live in a bad neighborhood where a lot of people get beat up. Think of how sad your life would be. Life just wouldn’t be the same, and you would suffer, thinking that you could’ve stopped that car crash when your parents died, only if you were there, maybe you would’ve been the one that died instead. Your life could completely turn around. Just like this family’s did.

Next to the three brother’s sad home life, there’s Johnny’s. His dad gets drunk all the time, and beats him up. He gets abused, and can do nothing about it. There’s no one to go to, not even his mom. His mother doesn’t care if her husband beats their son, she lets it slide by. It doesn’t cause a problem for her; it keeps him out of her hair. Since he doesn’t care for his dad, or his mother, he never wants to be home. He usually sleeps at friend’s houses or in alleys to avoid getting hurt. And even when Johnny was wanted to go to jail because he killed a guy, they didn’t care that he ran away. They probably didn’t even notice he was gone. If they did notice, they wouldn’t go after him. It’s not like they’re doing this because they love him, because that would be horrible. If you love someone it doesn’t mean you go around abusing them. Now that’s plain cruel.

Many different stories have parents that aren’t always the greatest. In The Absolute Diary of a Part Time Indian, is an example. Arnold’s parents were there for him, but they weren’t whenever he was in trouble. It makes the story more interesting when they’re not really part of the story because the main character controls the conflict, and he gets more freedom, and he controls his own life. There are many other stories that have parents gone, or not in control of the story, like the Harry Potter series, the Maximum Ride serious, and many others. If the parents were in control Ponyboy would’ve never run away, and Johnny wouldn’t have gotten killed. It makes a huge difference when a parent is dead because they take care of their kid, and if they’re dead, then they can’t do that. If in The Outsiders Ponyboy’s parents were alive, a whole bunch of things wouldn’t go wrong if something was different in this story.

That’s why family is really important to a book. Not all the time, but most of the time it gives it a twist. But in real life, everyone should be able to have a good relationship with someone in their family, even if it means being best friends with a sibling, and parent, or even your dog. It’s important that that everybody has someone to look up to.

Poem Response

Authors Note:
In the book, "The Outsiders" there is a poem by Jack Frost called "Nothing Gold can Stay", and we were supposed to explain what it means to us. Give me feedback on if what I think the poem means seems right to you.

I think the poem, "Nothing Gold Can Stay" means that you don't know what you have until it's gone, which really means you can't take advantage of life. Stick with it, and try your best.Live life at it's fullest. Never give up your dreams. Just like Ponyboy and Johnny. They never gave up. Well, in some parts they did, but not in all. When the church was burning down, they both risked their lives and never gave up on saving the little kids. Their lives will never be the same, because they lived their life at it's fullest.

The cause of Bob's death

The reason why Bob died, is really because of Dally. He made Cherry and Marcia (Socs)really weirded out because he was hitting on them. Johnny stood up to Dally, and told him to back off. So, they got to sit by the girls. Before they knew it, they were friends. One day the group was walking back from the movie with the two girls, and their boyfriends(one of them was Bob)pulled up and saw Johnny and Ponyboy with them, so they got very angry. Later that night, Bob and 5 other socs and Johnny and Ponyboy were all at the park, and Bob started drowning Ponyboy, so Johnny stabbed Bob. It's like a domino affect that never stops. Dally probably would never think it was his fault, but he should go to jail instead of Johnny. It was just self defense.

Ponyboy

Ponyboy is a very kind person, doesn't like to beat people up or get involved with bad things. He never has beaten anyone up, but people have beaten him up. Ponyboy has a bad home life. His parents died, so he lives with his two older brothers, and one of them is really mean to him and always yells at him, the other one is nice though. He dresses like a greaser, because he is one, with his hair greased back, and always wearing old ripped shirts with jeans. He's a good person, but I think he will accidentally set the church on fire with his cigarettes.

Sane...Or Insane?

Have you ever asked yourself you were crazy? Or insane? Well the character the short story, Tell Tale Heart, never would think of asking themselves that question, even though the person killed an old man, and chopped him to pieces; just because the man had an annoying eye. Many people were probably annoyed with his eye, but he didn’t have to kill him! In some people’s perspective, he could be normal, not too insane, but in my opinion he’s totally crazy and needs some help.

Some people could think this character isn’t too insane, and I can get why. They could think that this person just gets paranoid really easy, or had a bad childhood or something. But it doesn’t make up for it. If people have bad lives when they’re little, it doesn’t mean they should go around killing people. If everyone died because of how they looked or because there was something wrong with them, we wouldn’t get anywhere in life; there would be no one left on Earth. Nobody’s perfect. Especially not the crazy guy from the story.

Now, you probably see where I’m coming from when I said he’s insane, because he truly is. For a whole week, every night at midnight he would sneak into the old man’s house, take an hour to get his head through the door, and see if the old man’s eye was open. He really wanted to kill the man, and he was pretty clever. When actually killed the man, he cut him up in the bath tub, so there would be no trace of the old man dying, and then he hid him in the floor boards. Another reason why I think he’s crazy is that he killed the man by suffocating him, with a mattress, and then cut him up. Why did he cut him up if he was already dead? It didn’t make any sense to me, and it would be easier to find the body, because there had to be some trail of blood. The craziest thing of all was that the man didn’t dislike the old man, he only killed him because of his eye. It always bugged him.

Crazy, insane, mental, wacko, these are all words that describe the character in the story. He has issues, and he really needs to fix them. Some people may have anger issues, and those issues need to go. People need to stand up for themselves if they know a person with anger issues, and fight back. Like the man, he heard the guy sneaking in his house, but he didn’t get up and run away, or smack with something. He just lay there, until he got killed. So technically, the old man was crazy, too. He knew it was coming sooner or later. He just didn’t want to admit it, but either way the other guy is completely insane and that will never change.

Are you proud of you Countrry?

Am I proud of my country? Heck yeah! We have freedom of speech, our own choice of religion, and T.V. How amazing is that? Not every country has rights, or television. So we’re pretty lucky. The thing I’m not proud of is the war. We should just be nice, and forget about violence. This is setting bad examples for little kids. Imagine where our world would be if every little kid liked hurting people. I know they’d be helping our country, but we don’t need to fight. We should make peace. Life would be so much easier.

Bullies

Bullies make me mad. They make me wonder why we have recesses at school. Imagine you’re playing on the monkey bars, and some kid comes up to you, and starts throwing rocks. How would you feel? Horrible. Have you ever bully reported someone? Well, it makes you feel bad. You start feeling bad for the person you reported, and then you think you’re the bully. It’s just not a pleasant time. Trust me.

The Importence of Characters

Have you ever wondered if there is anyone out there that has a more imperfect life than you? Well, there is, and his name is Arnold Spirit. He goes from the school in his home town, to an all white school in a rich town. In the book, The Absolute Diary of a Part Time Indian, Arnold has a horrible life. He was born with too much brain juice in his head, which makes him have commas once in a while, and he lives in a horrible Indian tribe. I guess it’s not horrible, but no one treats him good. They all disrespected him, which is never good. His old best friend, Rowdy, probably treated him the worst. At one point he showed him his butt! And his grandma, who he loved with all his heart, died at the worst time. Also, his dad’s best friend that gave him rides to school every day, died of drugs. All these characters had a good reason for what happened to them, and they were all important to the story.

The author always had some surprise attack thing going on. She would have a character be all mean to Arnold, and then the next minute they were best friends! It’s just so confusing. When it goes from one thing to another, it’s hard to keep track. Also, there were too many characters. There were like, twenty or more. But, one of them, was basically in charge of the school, and was a bully to Arnold. Then the next day, BOOM! Best friends! What’s up with that? And this girl that Arnold really liked didn’t like him. But then, she started liking him. It’s just weird how everything went great at the rich school while in Arnold’s home town everything went bad. It never worked out both ways. But it did fit into the story, and the author probably did that to give it a twist. And it made it better, so I guess its okay. But, I bet I’m not the only person that gets annoyed with stories where nothing good happens, just a bunch of awful things in a row, and everything goes wrong.

Every character is different in this story, and they all have a reason to be in it.They all have different reasons to be there. Arnold’s friends are there so they can bully him, talk behind his back, or to just be a good friend so he’s not some loner that spends his Saturdays playing video games in a basement all by himself. His teachers are there so they can teach him lessons in life, and just basic lessons in school. Some are mean, some are nice and some give him marvelous advice. All the people around him are there to treat him bad, and disrespect him. But in some parts in the story, it switches up a bit. Everything is backwards. That’s why you never know what to expect.

Have you ever wondered if certain characters in a story would make a difference if they weren’t there? Well, it really would. Every character makes a difference, because they all either make life difficult for the main character, or make it better. I think there were numerous lessons for the story, and I think each character taught a different one. Arnold’s would be to never give up your dreams. Keep fighting, no matter how hard it can be. Rowdy’s would be push your way through life, even if you have to physically, and mentally hurt someone. And there are many others. See, if Rowdy wasn’t there, he would have never had been mean to Arnold by hurting him, he would have never met any new friends, and everything would just be different. That’s why every character is important to the story. One diminutive detail can change everything.

Autumn

Autumn is a wonderful time of year. The leaves are changing, the wind is blowing, and it’s almost time for Halloween! That’s my third favorite time of the year! I can taste the candy now. Sweet, sour, and sugary. The way rocks crunch below my feet, while walking up the hills, trick or treating. The weight of all the candy I carry, in a pillow case, on my back. All the little kids dressed as batman, or Cinderella. Who wouldn’t be excited for Halloween?

Short Story conclusion (with outline)

Authors note:
For class we had to write a conclusion on Rapunzel, but change the story a little. We changed the story by saying the Prince was to fat and weak to climb her hair.

- A lady got sick and her husband went and got her medicine over the wall in their evil neighbors yard

- The couple had to give their baby up to her to be able to live

- When the girl was 12, she got locked in a tower with no door, no stairs, no way to get out.

- One day, a prince came by and tried climbing Rapunzel’s hair, up to the tower, but he was too fat.

The man struggled so much, but then one day, he used all his might, but accidently pulled her down. She was flopping through the air. The girl and the horse made some great contact, when she fell onto his back. She was passed out. He carried her all the way to the middle of the forest, dropped her, and left. This prince came back, about a week later, and she was gone. He searched everywhere for her, and one day he finally found her. She was laying in a ditch, crying, with a shaved head. The prince couldn’t believe this. She looked really ugly without her hair, so he left her alone to sob by herself. And he never came back.

Hook for the Duck story

“What’s that Frank? He’s in the lead? Oh, look! There he is! Here comes Billy Bob Joe Bob III!” Billy and Lego were great friends, until that day. They were competing against each other, trying to win the gold medal for the Duck Olympics. They might still be great friends, but even bigger enemies. Oh, and here comes Lego, out of nowhere, right behind Billy, crying. He’s carrying a scarf. But why?

Letter to Arnold Spirt (character in Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian)

Dear Arnold,
You’re not very bright (even though you are the smartest kid in your school), and you annoy me. You always do the stupidest things, and you have the worst luck. Why does everything bad happen to you? It just doesn’t seem realistic. All the bad things that happen to you are just horrible. And they all happen in a row. It’s like you were meant to be treated bad by people. You’re a poor kid that lives in some Indian tribe and nobody likes you because you have some weird disease when you have to much brain juice in your noggin, and you basically have no real friends until you transfer to an all white school. You wanted to go there because you wanted to do something with your life. Which might happen, but I kind of doubt it. You’re too unlucky.

Once you get to the all white school, you made lots of friends, got smarter, and more athletic. But, your tribe ended up hating you because you can never go back once you leave your tribe. Since you went to a different school, everyone thought you kind of left them, or betrayed them, so they all were against you. But that’s your fault! No one else’s! Even though you wanted to do something with your life, you got to learn they probably will never forgive you. So deal with it. And even though your grandma and your sister and your dad’s best friend dies, you should still go to school. I’ve had family members die, and I went to school. Don’t be a wuss. You’re a big boy. I do feel bad that they died, but that’s just how life is.

But in the end, since you kind of fixed your anger issues, you became friends with your old best friend, that was really mean to you. He beat you up (well, after you went to the other school and “betrayed” him), called you names, sent a picture of his bare butt, he was just mean. So, I’m just giving you some advice here, but you should man up, and be less girly. You cry too much.Oh, and why do you have a diary? You’re a 14 year old guy. Get a life.

-Sincerely Brittany

Kindergarten

kindergarten was so fun! I wish I could go back and relive it. I loved when we took little naps and I pretended I was sleeping. Unfortunately, I got moved in this cubby thing all alone in the dark. My teacher hated me. This one time I tried drawing this one guy holding balloons, and accidentally did something a little wrong. It was so funny. I miss Kindergarten. All I really cared about was having a spot on the bee hive each recess. Gosh I miss that! :)

I absolutely HATE school pictures! You always so scared and paranoid about them. You'll be all spazy like saying," Oh my god!Are people going to like my picture? Oh, crap that is one of the ugliest pictures I have ever had!" and stuff like that. Why does everyone care about them so much? This is a question I should be asking myself. I always need my picture to be perfect. Of course, that never happens. I always end up looking demented and weird. Some day I will look back and laugh at all my pictures. That won't be anytime soon, though. I'm just a sad little nugget.

SNL(dreams)

I have two dreams. One is to be a therapist, or be on Saturday Night Live. That is my biggest goal! Me and my friend Ali plan to be on it together. It would be so cool and fun! I basically just want to become famous though. Another HUGE dream I would like to accomplish would be in at least one movie with Adam Sandler. I love that guy. Or Will Ferrell, but I like Adam Sandler better. He’s my favorite actor. Anyway, we also have this one plan that sometime this year we will be on the show Hole in the Wall (it’s in New York). Since it’s by New York City, we’ll also go to the building SNL is in. Then people will come up to us and say “Oh my gosh! You guys are so funny! You should be on our show!” And we’ll say”Okay why not?” But, of course, this will never happen. That’s why they are called “dreams”. Not reality.

"Deep Water"

Everyone has fears. Some are small fears, and some are big. It depends on what it is. In the short story ”Deep Water”, William Douglas is afraid of water, which later he realizes it wasn’t half bad. Then, he was scared of it again, but now he loves it. This short story is truly trying to tell us to face our fears, and if we’re still afraid, then try it again. You’ll be surprised what happens.

Many people try to face their fears. Many people are too afraid to try. And others, like William, do a little of both. By that I mean that they stay away from their fears for years, then they face them. William was so scared, he did stay away from water. This affected his life in many ways. He couldn’t go swimming, or fishing, or do anything that had to do with water, just because he was too scared. Fears can sneak up on you, which can come faster than you think.

For William, he didn’t really fear anything at the moment, but then out of nowhere someone made him drown. After almost dying, after a long, long time of almost dying, he finally realized that water is okay to swim in, and to canoe in. He ended up being a very fast swimmer. Also, he ended up loving water. This can really help people who read this because they could realize how some of their fears can be solved easily.

The short story, ”Deep Water” by William O. Douglas is truly a example about how to face your fears, or helps you face your fears. Also, it could help someone think more about their actions because they might end up injure someone really bad. You can learn many lessons from this story, but the main one is to face your fears and try your hardest to succeed.

the Pearl

What would you do if your baby was dying? You wouldn’t just sit there and let it happen. Wouldn’t you fight for your baby to live? In the story, “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck, that’s what the two main characters do (Kino and Juana). Through the book, many tragic things happen. This is why the story is a tragedy. Not an irony, not a romance. A tragedy.

The plot line for tragedy starts with the world in conflict. In the beginning of the book, Coyotito get’s stung by a scorpion. Then there’s rise to power for Kino when he finds the pearl. Next there’s a tragic flaw when none of the pearl dealers wouldn’t buy his pearl because “it was fake”. Now everything starts to fall apart. Kino “accidently” kills a man, beats Juana, and they have to hide otherwise they will be killed. At the end there was death. The baby dies of being shot in the head. The story fits the whole plotline. So, clearly it’s a tragedy.

There wasn’t much symbolism for tragedy, but there was some. Like, usually it was dark or night time when they were outside. Also, in the beginning of the story, a dog went up to Kino and begged for food. Another thing would be that there were very harsh winds when they were walking to the capital. That night when they were in the cave, there was a wolf howling in the distance. There’s one more when Kino saw those guys on horses looking for him and his family. So, I guess there kind of was a lot, but not at the same time. You’re never really sure what the mode of literature books are.

In the story, “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck, there are many bad things that happen. It teaches you a lesson of how you shouldn’t be so greedy or superstitious, like Kino and Juana, or bad things might happen. Basically the meaning of this book is to listen to what people have to say and don’t ignore them. They might seem like a bad idea at the time, but at the end you realize you should’ve listened to them. And you’ll realize that you made a big mistake. It’s also just taught the readers a moral lesson. As you can see, this book is truly a tragedy. You can tell by just looking at the plot line, the symbolism, and just using common sense.

The Pearl(reflection) for the whole book

I'm about to cry! Not really but that was so sad. I can't believe those guys actually shot off Coyotiyo's head! I think it's just wrong.I mean people now don't go around trying to kill someone that found a pearl, OR go around killing babies! At the end of the chapter, it was so confusing! The author didn't do a good job giving details because I didn't know if Kino stole the gun or if that guy still had it. So I was so confused because I thought Kino shot the baby in the head, but he didn't. I think that before in the book when Juana said that the pearl was giving them evil, Kino should have listened to her. Look where he ended up.
(My first paragraph is all about the last chapter because that's what I thought we were supposed to to sorry)

The book "The Pearl", is so boring in the beginning! It was one of the worst books I've ever read. But, when I got further in the book, it got better. I'm not saying I loved it, but I thought it was okay. Anyway, one of my favorite parts was probably the part when someone showed up in their house when they were sleeping. I like that part because it was when the book started being good. It confused me, but many things confuse me. Even though I don't think it was my fault I was confused, it was the authors.

I would not recommend this book to anyone because for me it was just irritating and boring. I just really don't like the parts where he explains way to much about things! IT TAKES UP TWO WHOLE PAGES!Which bores me. :)

Journal reflection for the pearl

Chapter 3 was really scary. It kinda made me think that the book became much better and more interesting. It was scary when he was sleeping, but then heard that noise in the corner. I was confused because I didn't know if the thing in the corner was an animal or a person. I was also confused if the blood on the knife was his or the thing that was there. Plus, how did he get cut on his head? Very confusing.
In the beginning of the book, I really didn't like it at all. It was so boring, but it keeps getting a little bit better. Even though it gets me confused. I think the doctor was rude in the beginning, then acted nice so he could get Kino's money which was really wrong. The person that was in there is definitely not him because he would be too lazy to do it.

Journal response for the pearl(chapter3)

The reason why Juana thinks the pearl will tear them apart. It makes sense that she thinks that because it seems like Kino keeps getting more closer to the pearl. By hugging it close to his chest, staring into it every now and then. She thinks someone will steal it and Kino would be crushed. That's why she wanted to crush it. Another possible reason is that maybe she liked everything how it was before, when they idn't have the pearl. She probably just misses having a normal family.
