Authors Note: we had to write a response to if we think our main character is a good narrator. If you are reading, War Comes to Willy Freeman, please comment if you agree with me. Thanks!
Willy, in War Comes to Willy Freeman, is the main character and the narrator. She shows how innocent she is and how sad her life is. She lives a very sad life and this book shows how she gets treated and how it feels to be a free African American girl. Also when she is stuck in weird and awkward situations, it makes it more dramatic because usually all the things that are happening to her would happen to women, not 13 year olds. When she’s sailing in the water and the soldiers see her, there’s not much she can do or say, but if she was older she would’ve actually known what to do. Instead of waiting in the boat and staring at the stars, waiting for the soldiers to come get her, she could’ve said something. But instead she made it more dramatic than it really had to be.
I personally think her point of view would be better than others in the story because she had a more interesting life, traveling around to try to find her mother. The only person I think would be more interesting to read about maybe would be her mom. While she was away for two years, it might have been interesting to read what she was doing and how the men treated her. If her mom was elling her point of view when she was dying, I'm sure it would be different because it seemed like she wanted to die. Willy didn't want her to, and I think it would end up being a lot different. Even if they were related, doesn't mean they have the same life.
